More Men Opting for Cosmetic Procedures

Great looks aren't just a girl thing. Men increasingly are opting for many of the same youth-preserving cosmetic procedures popular among women. Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that men underwent 12,827,957 non-invasive and minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures in 2013 - a 65-percent increase from 2000. That figure accounts for eight percent of all such procedures performed nationwide in 2013.
The top aesthetic procedures that men are choosing include:
- Botox - 385,358 procedures
- Laser hair removal - 190,546 procedures
- Microdermabrasion - 178,410 procedures
- Dermal fillers - 95,361 procedures
- Chemical peel - 94,625 procedures
So why are men increasingly hitting up the spa? Among the top factors is America's tight economy, which has made landing lucrative jobs and promotions tougher. Mature men often feel they're at a disadvantage when competing against much younger candidates, particularly as a growing percentage of older workers delay retirement. Cosmetic procedures that effectively shave years off a man's looks can help level the playing field.
Also, Americans today are more health conscious and physically active than in generations before. Baby Boomers and Generation Xers are living longer, but feeling far younger than their actual ages. Cosmetic procedures can help close the gap between the age a man is and the age he feels.
Plus, attitudes about what is and is not socially acceptable have changed dramatically over the past few decades. Thus, undergoing cosmetic surgery and aesthetic procedures is far more socially acceptable for men today than in the past.
